At Pinecrest School we stress the importance of safe, responsible behaviour. Each year, across Ontario, many students receive serious head and eye injuries due to being hit by a snowball. For this reason, The Hastings & Prince Edward District School Board does not permit snowball throwing while on school property. Please note our school policy for throwing snow/snowballs.
-
Students will be reminded of the "No Snowballs" school rule.
-
First incident - A letter will go home to parents to be signed. The letter must be returned to the office the next morning.
-
Repeat incidents - Students will lose recess privileges.
Please discuss the importance of the "No Snowballs" rule and school safety with your children. |

On bad weather days, please monitor cancellation information by listening to a local radio station or using the Bus Cancellation link which is located on the bottom left hand side of the front page of this web page.
When buses are cancelled, the school is still open unless announced otherwise. If your children walk to school or if their bus is not one of the cancelled buses, and you choose not to send them, it is important to you notify the school that they will not be in attendance.
When a bus does not travel in the morning due to fog, and the fog clears during the day, that bus shall pick up at the school in the afternoon for the journey home.
When a bus does not travel in the morning due to ice and/or snow conditions, it will not do so in the afternoon. Therefore, if you drive your children to school in the morning, you will have to pick them up in the afternoon and be available in the event of early school closure.
In the event of an Early Dismissal, staff will attempt to contact homes of Kindergarten and Grades 1 to 4 students. Please ensure our school office has up-to-date telephone numbers (home/parents' work, emergency contacts) for your child/children. Please try to avoid calling the school as we need the lines free to make calls. For Grades 5 to 8 students, please review with your children what they should do in case of the event that all contacts cannot be made prior to bus departure.
Thank you for your co-operation in ensuringg the safety of our students. |

We are asking for everyone's help in our attempt to provide a safe learning environment for anaphylactic students.
Please read the label to ensure that snack and lunch items do not contain traces of nuts or nut products.
Thank you for respecting the safety of our children. |

Effective September, 2011, Ontario Schools will be mandated to comply with The School Food and Beverage Policy which requires that all food and beverages offered for sale meet specific nutritional standards. This policy will have an impact on the types of foods that we will be offering for sale as part of our lunch program and canteen.
In preparation for this change, School Council has investigated options that meet the nutritional standards. We are fortunate that Angelo's Pizzeria in Picton has worked with the school to ensure that their pizzas meet the guidelines. Pizza will be available on alternate Fridays beginning on September 30th. In addition, students will have the option to order hot lunches on a regular basis. We will also continue to sell milk through our canteen.
Lunch Days:
Pizza Days - February 24th, March 9th, March 23rd
Hot Lunch Days - February 17th, March 2nd, March 30th
Further information regarding this policy can be found at:

"Read with Us" continues to be an important reading program to encourage and support regular reading practice, particularly in our primary and junior classes.
Our October goal, to spend 15 minutes reading at home on 15 separate occasions, was achieved by 75% per cent of primary students and 75% of our junior students. This result surpasses our school goal of 50%. Well done Pinecrest!
We sincerely appreciate the support of parents in this initiative. Daily reading practice is an effective way to improve reading fluency in our younger students. It is also a great way for families to learn together and to share in the joy of reading.
As the days get shorter and the nights get colder, what could be better than spending time enjoying a good book with a child? |
|
Milk orders will be managed differently this year. Beginning on October 3rd, students will have the
opportunity to purchase milk cards at a cost of $6.00 per card. Each milk card will be good
for eight cartons of milk. Students will present their card at the canteen in exchange for a
milk carton. |

Campbell's LABELS FOR EDUCATION |
|
The Labels for Education programme is a great way to receive additional audio visual and sports equipment for our school. Please help us by saving your labels and sending them to school.
We collect all Campbell's Soup labels, including Chunky, Ready-to-Serve, and Ready-to-Serve broth boxes, as well as V-8 Splash, Goldfish and Chili.
Please remember that we need both the UPC code and the front panel of the label in order to submit the label for our school. |

|
Scholastic Books has developed a new on-line resource that builds a love of reading and learning online! BookFlix provides unlimited access to a rich collection of children’s books that capture a child’s imagination and help to build a curiosity about the world. BookFlix links fictional video storybooks from Weston Woods with nonfiction eBooks from Scholastic to reinforce reading skills and develop essential real-world knowledge and understanding. Children are able to identify areas of their own personal interests and BookFlix provides on-line access to books that fit into that interest category. This resource gives children an excellent opportunity to develop their reading using both fiction and non-fiction materials. Home access is now available to all families through the following link:
