PPL - HEALTHY ACTIVE LIVING-OPEN COURSES


The Healthy Active Living Courses are designed to expose students to a variety of enjoyable team and individual activities where they will refine and apply movement skills and develop strategies and tactics. In addition, students will engage themselves in fitness sessions in order to set and achieve realistic personal goals. Social skills and safety are also emphasized in a healthy interactive team environment. Healthy Living classes will involve the acquisition of knowledge and skills to promote positive lifestyle choices for now and in the future. The overall goal is to develop a commitment to lifelong involvement in an active and healthy lifestyle.

Personal and Fitness Activities 1: (Co-Ed): Grade 11 - Open (PAF 30)

This course emphasizes regular participation in a variety of fitness activities accomplished through a wide range of methods (strength, cardiovascular, endurance, and flexibility training) that promote lifelong healthy active living. Students will learn skills and principles, develop strategies to improve personal fitness and physical competence and examine injury prevention. Students will also study the components of healthy relationships, reproductive health, mental health, and personal safety.

The focus of this course is to promote a healthy lifestyle through personal fitness planning, weight training, aerobic training, creative dance movement, yoga, pilates and circuit training. There is a small fee in this course of $40.00 for materials.

Prerequisite: None


Personal and Fitness Activites 2: (Co-Ed): Grade 12- Open (PAF 40)

This course emphasizes regular participation in a variety of  fitness activities accomplished through a wide range of methods (strength, cardiovascular, endurance, and flexibility training) that promote lifelong healthy living. Students will learn skills and principles, develop strategies to improve personal fitness and physical competence, examine injury prevention and implement personal physical fitness plans. In addition, they will be given opportunities to refine their decision-making, conflict-resolution, and interpersonal skills, with a view to enhancing their mental health and their relationships with others.

Students will develop and implement personal physical fitness plans with a focus in weight training, aerobic training, sport specific training and body composition. There is a small fee in this course of $40.00 for materials.

*Basketball, Soccer, Floor Hockey, Flag-football, Handball, Lacrosse, Ultimate, Tchoukball

*Badminton, Volleyball, Pickleball, Paddleball, Tennis, Takraw


STRIKING / FIELDING:

*Three pitch



TARGET: 


*Bocce, Curling



STRATEGY AND TACTICS / SPORT THEORY



*Students apply strategies and tactics in game and tournaments situations

*Students demonstrate understanding of movement principles, sport rules and guidelines


 ACTIVE PARTICIPATION


*Daily effort and initiative

*Provision of proper attire



FITNESS


*Personal assessment and goal setting - cardio-respiratory fitness, muscular endurance,
 
 muscular strength, healthy body composition and flexibility

*Development of a Fitness Portfolio

Checklist of Guidelines to be Successful in PPL Courses

            
 

Prior to Class

            During Class Towards the end of Class


-any assignments due?

-bring proper gym clothes-T-shirt, shorts, non-marking running shoes only

-no wet or dirty shoes permitted, no ball caps in class

-know your schedule i.e. gym or health room: there are 2-2 week health blocks in this course (see schedule posted on the gym wall)

-arrive on time-enter the gym before the final bell

-do not bring valuables: money, MP3 players, digital cameras….

-do not bring food or soft drinks into the gym or change rooms

-water bottles are allowed and encouraged

-exercise responsible behavior in the change room, change quickly and enter the gym

-assist with setting up equipment-nets…

-if the teacher is present and equipment is out, you may practice skills safely

-no teacher=no equipment

-remove jewelry -BB:earring studs allowed, VB:no jewelry Badminton:no hanging jewelry

-join squads as directed by teacher for: attendance, announcements if you are injured or ill

-a note to be excused is required

-a doctor’s note is required if you will miss >3 days of participation

-when you are excused, bring sports rules or other work and offer to assist with tasks i.e. scoring / timing, equipment it is not a free period




-you evaluation in this course

-you will write theory tests on sports rules / movement principles toward the end of most units

- there will be lessons and drills so that you may apply movement skills in game and tournament settings

-get organized quickly for drill sessions

–this will allow more time for games at the end of class

-assist with equipment - score board….

-always follow Ontario Safety guidelines and teacher guidelines -exercise responsible social behavior

-zero tolerance of physical or verbal abuse

-do not leave the gym or enter the change room without permission

-when you are granted permission to leave (one student at a time- 3 minutes)

-bring a water bottle

- do not share water bottles: this is actually a safety guideline!

-if the fire alarm sounds, safely and quickly exit the school via the proper route explained to you by your teacher and wait in the assigned area for attendance












-assist with taking equipment down and putting it away: as your teacher would really appreciate this

-you have 5 minutes to change

-after you come out of the change room you must wait for the dismissal bell inside the gym

-don’t be afraid to ask questions about assignments, evaluations...etc.
