Weekly Mission #18

Spring forward

Clean out your closet and take any extra clothes to a local thrift store

It is spring! And we all know what that means - spring cleaning. Let’s give all of the clothes that we do not need or use to a local thrift store or homeless shelter. This is a great opportunity to help others that may be in need. Sometimes things in life happen and we are in need of assistance. Let’s face it, many of us have more clothes then we know what to do with. So, if you have a few extra pieces that you haven’t looked at in a while, think about donating them! J

Some of us have extra books and magazines. If you have ones that you are done with – donate them! Bring them to doctor’s offices, libraries or possibly a seniors home. Any extra items that you are done with or no longer need – donate! Have fun with the mission!!

Good luck with this week’s mission and let us know how it goes! Submit your stories to our blog

Weekly Mission #17 for the week of May 14 - 20th

Encourage Each Other

We all know how much easier it is to do something when we have someone who supports us. When you offer encouragement you are giving hope and/or support to each other.

Encouragement builds confidence. It gives us the mind-set that we are able to not only go after, but obtain the things we want and strive for.

This week encourage each other to get involved and do something you have always wanted to do.  Whether it is encouraging someone by attending their game/recital, or calling someone to wish them luck on a presentation or test; be sure to encourage.

Just a reminder that all the encouragement for this mission needs to remain positive. Celebrate the Hero is all about creating an environment that is conducive to all. We encourage you to go out this week and say give support to someone. We know you can do it! We believe in you!

Good luck with this week’s mission and let us know how it goes! Submit your stories to our blog www.cellythehero.tumblr.com

Celebrate You, Celebrate the Hero

"Take every opportunity to give others encouragement."
-- Lucy MacDonald

Monday, May 7th  Nick Foly of "Celebrate the Hero"  joined us at Park Dale. " Celebrate the Hero is an initiative that celebrates individuals who refrain from harming the wellbeing of others -- and instead conduct themselves in a manner that enhances the lives of others."

Mission  for the week of  May 7 - 13 -"Chivalry week"

This week is going to be fun! Set a trend with Chivalry. Let’s start with the meaning of Chivalry:

·         The noble qualities a knight is supposed to encompass

·         Gallantry (bravery), courtesy and honour

·         Courage and a readiness to help the weak and meek

·         The demonstration of any of these qualities is the meaning of chivalry

With these virtues in mind, go out into your life and be someone’s knight!  Live with Chivalry. Don’t miss any opportunity to show a courageous quality in a situation where, it may not mean very much to you, but it may perhaps mean the world to someone else!

Some say that the age of chivalry is past, that the spirit of romance is dead. The age of chivalry is never past so long as there is a wrong left undressed on earth”

-          Charles Kingsley

Websites to assist with Relational Aggression

Relational Aggression has a huge impact on teenagers and pre teens, typically girls.   It is a psychological term that signifies the use of relationships to hurt peers.   Compared to other types of aggression, like physical violence, it is quieter, more insidious, and harder to detect.  It includes starting rumors, spreading gossip, teasing, creating or joining cliques, deliberately excluding another child and other similar actions.

It is incredibly important that we face this issue head on as the impact of it is it prevents kids from aligning with one another during a very important time in there psychosocial development.  It also deprives children from a valuable support system: their peers.   ( Taken from Girl Wars by Cheryl Dellasega, Ph. D. )

So what can we do?  I strongly believe that every problem in the world is communication, and equally, every solution is communication.  We need to keep the lines of communication open with our children.  Let them know that they matter and work to help them improve their self image.    Unfortunately, we can't change others..... but we can make changes to ourselves.... we can empower ourselves to not let others  impact our self esteem.   This is where families and caring friends are so important.

The following web sites may be of assistance in our work at supporting our children.  Good luck and together we can make a difference.

Principal's Picks

The following books are my current favourite reads.   They are best used as a read along with parents, so that dialogue can occur and some of the more difficult concepts be explained.  I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.   I do have personal copies that I would be willing to lend, just give me a call.  Stacey

Restorative Practices
Restorative Practices are one part of Park Dale's school improvement plan.  The following quote helps us to understand the practice and is taken from one of the best sites I have seen on the subject Click here to see the entire site.    (www.transformingconflict.org/Restorative_Approaches_and_Practices.php).  I hope this helps.   Stacey

The restorative approach is based on the belief that the people best placed to resolve a conflict or a problem are the people directly involved, and that imposed solutions are less effective, less educative and possibly less likely to be honoured. In order to engage in a restorative approach to conflict and challenging behaviour people need certain attitudes and skills. Skills-based training can develop both restorative skills and attitudes.

It can help participants to identify a variety of applications of these skills to meet the needs of the whole school community. The ultimate aim of the training and the project is to build a strong, mutually respectful, safe and inclusive school community in which everyone feels valued and heard.
