The Global Awareness Committee -- Free the Children
Over the past two school years, the Global Awareness Committee at Bayside Secondary School has been running a number of very successful fund raising activities. We have had Bike-A-Thons, Vows of Silence, Bake Sales and other initiatives to raise money for worthy causes. This year we sent over $1800.00 to assist in the Haiti earthquake relief, which was matched by the Canadian Government. In partnership with CSS, we helped build a school in rural China. This school was built with the assistance of Free The Children, an organization dedicated to helping children around the world.

Girls' Retreat
On Tuesday, June 1st, approximately one hundred girls from Bayside and our feeder schools will attended an "Empowering Young Women" retreat in the cafeteria. Morning events included an introduction to yoga session, a guest speaker on self esteem, and a "Dressing for Work on a Budget" fashion show. After lunch the girls cycled through stations on the following topics: skin care, hair care, nail care, massage therapy, summer jobs, and body image/self esteem. This event would not have been possible without the participation and support of community organizations and businesses. We would like to acknowledge them for contributing time and/or products to the event:
- Arbonne, Avon, The Body Shop, Shoppers Drug Mart Cosmetics (Quinte Mall) and Sears Cosmetics who are sent skin care experts and donated products
- Value Village, and Giant Tiger (Sidney St.) who donated outfits
- Winners, Quinte Mall, who loaned two outfits for the fashion show
- HPEDSB for assisting with gifts and morning snack
- Career Edge and Youth Hab who will be manning booths in the afternoon
- Christine Lavoie, RTM
- Ashley Longo of Salon You
- Heather Aide and the students of THS Aesthetics Program
- Status of Women, OSSTF for providing journals for all the girls

Guest Speaker - Don Aker
Mrs. Moody's Grade Ten English class was able to have a Video Conference with the author of the novel, The First Stone. This was the first time Bayside Secondary School has been able to speak directly, on Skype, with an author. Mr. Aker told us it was the first time he had ever done a Video Conference too, so we felt priviliged.
Mr. Aker teaches English in a high school in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Students were able to ask the author, Don Aker, interesting questions about the book and about him. One student wanted to know why he chose to end the novel the way he did. Mr. Aker said that there had been a lot of response from the ending of The First Stone, so he decided to write a sequel to the novel. This was a really great experience for all concerned.

Youth and Philanthropy Initiative
Grade 9 Students at Bayside Secondary are among thousands of high school students world-wide who participate annually in Youth and Philanthropy Initiative or YPI. The students made their final presentations on May 18th.
Bayside's grade 9 geography classes researched social issues and advocated on behalf of a local grassroots charity. After an introductory workshop, students worked together in groups and study the diverse social needs of their community. Then they selected a social need that they were passionate about.
To gain greater insight into the charity, students set up site visits and conducted interviews with charity workers and members of the community who use the services provided by the charity. With research complete, groups then put together a 10 minute presentation on their charity and how a grant would help it achieve its mission and better serve its clients. The team with the most compelling presentation won a $5,000 grant awarded directly to their chosen charity. This year's winner was Three Oaks Foundation.

Author Visit
On Thursday, May 13th, twenty four White Pine members attended a &ldquoVoices from the Forest&rdquo symposium at the Board of Education offices. Students participated in workshops featuring four White Pine authors, including this year&rsquos award winner, Pam Bustin. Thirteen of our students were able to participate in a special writing workshop offered by Ms. Bustin, and Sarah Sly was fortunate to enjoy a forty-five minute one-on-one session with the author. However, the excitement did not end there. The next morning Bayside White Pine members were treated to a special writing workshop with Wondrous Strange author Lesley Livingston. Ms. Livingston challenged students&rsquo fantasy writing skills and provided a gentle critique for those writers who shared their creations with the group. A special thank you goes out to Mr. Montgomery and
Student Success teacher Mrs. Francis for providing a large portion of the funding required for the Bayside writing session.
24 Hours for Hunger
Over 130 students went without food for 24 hours on May 14-15th to raise as much money and awareness as possible about hunger in the Quinte area through Meal Exchange&rsquos 24 4 Hunger campaign. As part of the event, students were involved in activities such as soccer, rock band and football and arranged for Dave Kranenburg, a Trenton High School graduate and now Executive Director of Meal Exchange, to speak about hunger in Canada. Maggie Balsdon and Jillian Macklin, the BSS students organizing the 24 4 Hunger campaign, first heard of it through Jordan Thompson, a BSS graduate who founded the campaign while coordinating Meal Exchange at the University of Guelph. &ldquoWe are concerned about the number of people relying on our local food banks, and wanted to do something about it&rdquo, said Jillian and Maggie.

EDP Focus Programme
Bayside has launched a new Focus Programme to support Employment Destination courses by integrating career resources in to the regular curriculum. A highlight of this new initiative was a visit to Bayside by acclaimed Chef Greg Sheridan of Sans Souci Catering. Everyone enjoyed Chef Sheridan&rsquos animated stories of his chef training at Loyalist College and at famous Canadian restaurants.

Syringe Robot Challenge
Mr. Pudlis' Gr. 9 Exploring Technology class recently began working on a new unit that introduced the students to mechanics and fluid power. Students worked in pairs to design and build pick and place style robots to compete in a class wide tournament. Students used tools, equipment and materials associated with various areas in the skilled trades and produced a number of outstanding examples of design, ingenuity and production skills. Congratulations to Tyler Wightman and Brady Gunning for receiving a perfect score for their dominating performance in the Syringe Robot Tournament.

Living Truth Conference
Some of Bayside&rsquos boys have a much better understanding of what it means to be a "guy" after attending &ldquoThe Living Truth&rdquo, a conference for young men that was held in Kingston on April 23, 2010. The goal of this first annual conference that was hosted by LaSalle Secondary School, was to empower some of our males by helping them understand what it means to be a guy and what supports are available to help them through their challenging adolescence. A very dynamic PK Smith captivated the audience with personal anecdotes from his own youth. PK works with &ldquoImpact Malawi&rdquo and is committed to eliminating the Third Word in his lifetime. He challenged the boys to set their own goals and to take steps to reach them. PK taught the students to break boards and reminded them that to be able to break their board, someone had to hold it for them!

The Results are in...
The University of Waterloo has sent us the results of the Grade 9, 10, 11 and 12 math contests. Cynthia Gao was in the top 20% out of 11460 students in Ontario to write it. She will receive a medal for being in first place for our grade 9 class and a certificate for her high achievement in the top 25%. In the grade 10 group Matthew Crummey placed in the top 6% of the 9676 students who wrote it. He will receive a medal for being in first place for our grade 10 class and will receive a certificate for being in the top 25%. Evan Metcalfe was in the top 11% of the same group and Colin Marshall was in the top 13%. Both will receive certificates for their high achievement, in the top 25%. This group also came first in their zone, which extends from Cobourg to Brockville and Picton to Bancroft. Terrific results like these do not happen very often. In the grade 11 group, Ryan Pardy placed first at our school achieving in the top 31% out of the 7950 students who wrote the test and will receive a medal. The five grade 12 participants all achieved scores higher than the overall average for the 9261 total patricipants. The top achiever for Bayside was Dominic Schmid, who placed in the top 21% of all students in Canada and will receive a certificate and a medal for such high results. Please also keep in mind that these are the top math students in the province that write these contests.
The Bayside White Tigers
Our White Tigers Group hosted Glen Relf and Shawn Trudeau of the OPP who came into the school April 9 to run a self-defense session. Both men are highly trained in martial arts and self-defense training and walked the girls through many techniques that would prepare them for at-risk situations. The girls were highly engaged and participated eagerly by modeling the techniques with their fellow group members. As a group we would like to thank our supporters from Hastings and Prince Edward Learning Foundation, Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board&rsquos Student Success Program and Speak Up: The Student Voice, an initiative for engaging students funded by the Ministry.

We are currently raising money for a rural school in India in an area that presently lacks in basic education. Bayside students have consistently demonstrated their citizenship, and we are very proud of their efforts.
